How CPA License Renewal Works in Arizona: Birth-Month Cycles, Firm Registration, and Deadlines
Arizona doesn't renew every CPA on the same date — your individual certificate renews in your own birth month, and which years you renew in depends on whether you were born in an odd or even year. Firm registration runs on an entirely separate clock. Here's exactly how each piece works, sourced to Arizona's own statute and administrative rule.
Individual CPA certificate: your birth month, every two years, matched to your birth year's parity
Per A.R.S. § 32-730 and A.A.C. R4-1-345(B)(1), Arizona's individual CPA certificate renews biennially (every two years) — but WHICH two years depends on your birth year's parity: if you were born in an even-numbered year, you renew during your birth month in every even-numbered year; born in an odd-numbered year, you renew during your birth month in every odd-numbered year. Renewal has to be received by the Board — postmarks don't count — no later than the last day of your birth month. "Received" means the electronic date stamp in Arizona time, or physical receipt. Firm/business registration: a separate anniversary cycle, not your birth month
This is the part that catches people who assume everything renews together. Per A.A.C. R4-1-345(B)(2), a business-organization firm — a partnership, PC, PLLC, LLC, or LLP — renews during the board-approved month of its initial registration, on the same odd/even-year parity as the year it first registered. That's a completely different anchor date than any individual owner's personal birth month. The one exception: a sole proprietorship or an individual registrant's own firm registration is NOT on this separate cycle — it rides along with that person's individual certificate renewal instead.
CPE: the same clock as your renewal, not a separate one
Unlike states that check continuing education on an annual calendar regardless of a multi-year license cycle, Arizona's CPE reporting period is defined identically to your renewal period itself — there's no separate CE deadline running on its own clock. Whatever window your certificate renewal covers is the same window your CPE hours are checked against.
What happens if you miss the deadline
Missing the last-day-of-the-month cutoff triggers automatic suspension, plus a $50 late fee to reactivate. That suspension isn't the end of the line by itself — but if it isn't resolved within 3 months, the certificate doesn't just stay suspended, it expires. That's a harder consequence than a simple late fee, and a real reason not to let a birth-month deadline sneak up on you.
Bottom line: if you're an Arizona CPA, your personal renewal (birth month, parity-matched) and your firm's registration (if you're not a sole proprietor) can land in completely different years from each other. Set a reminder for your Arizona deadline here so you're tracking the date that actually applies to you, not a guess at when "renewal season" is.
