What “calculated” actually looks like, state by state

This isn't one formula — every state renews on its own rule, and those rules take genuinely different shapes. A few real examples, straight from the same dataset the calculator above draws on:

StateCycle typeWhat the tool returns
Illinoisfixed calendarSeptember 30, 2027
Texasbirth monthDepends on a personal fact — the calculator above asks for it, then answers
Ohiofixed calendar cohortDepends on a personal fact — the calculator above asks for it, then answers
FloridaotherNo public rule ties this to a knowable input — the calculator says so, honestly

How this actually works

Picking your state above looks itself up in the exact same dataset that state's own page renders from — there's no second, different formula running here. Most states resolve to one plain date immediately. States whose rule depends on a personal fact — your birth month, or which cohort group your license falls in — ask for that fact before answering, using the exact same inputs that state's own rule actually uses. Either way, the date you get is never estimated or guessed — if we can't confirm it against a primary source, the calculator says so instead of showing a number, same as the Florida row above.

Frequently asked

Is this actually free? Yes — looking up your own renewal date has never required an account, a signup, or a fee. The paid tier is for firms tracking a whole staff roster in one place, not for an individual checking their own date.

Why does my state say “enter your date” instead of showing one? Some states' renewal cycles genuinely depend on a fact we don't have — when you were originally licensed, which cohort group you're in, or similar — and the state board itself doesn't publish a lookup we can compute from. Rather than guess, the page says so and lets you enter your own known date to track from there.

How do you know these dates are right? Every date traces to either the state board's own published page or the actual codified statute/rule, with the date we last confirmed it shown on that state's own page — see the full verification writeup.

Tracking a whole firm's staff, not just your own license? See the firm overview — the same free, sourced deadline data in one roster view instead of one state at a time.
