Frequently asked questions
How does Alaska's CPA license renewal cycle work?
Biennial. All individual CPA/public-accountant licenses share one statewide fixed licensing period -- currently January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 -- with no cohort/parity/birth-month split. This date is corroborated by the parallel firm-permit rule (12 AAC 04.280(c), which explicitly states a renewal is 'due not later than December 31') and by the Board's own published renewal materials, though the individual-license statute (AS 08.04.105(a)) establishes only the general biennial mechanic, not this specific date, in its own text. Exception: the Board's renewal form (cpa4060.pdf) states licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date run to the NEXT biennial expiration instead -- someone newly licensed in the last 90 days of this window renews in 2029, not 2027.
How much does it cost to renew a CPA license in Alaska?
$300. Flat $300 biennial renewal fee, per 12 AAC 02.340(4). Firm permit renewal is a separate, higher $400 biennial fee, per 12 AAC 02.340(9). On the Board's most recent renewal forms (cpa4060.pdf/cpa4062.pdf, 2026-2027 cycle, due Dec 31, 2025), licenses/permits first issued on or after January 1, 2025 were prorated to $150/$200; the 2028-2029 form (for the Dec 31, 2027 renewal) isn't published yet, so newer licensees/firms should check it when it posts.
Does Alaska require CPE hours to renew a CPA license?
Yes -- Alaska requires 80 hours of CPE every 2 years. That includes 4 ethics hours. See the full Alaska CPE requirements page for the exact citation.
What does it cost to reinstate a lapsed Alaska CPA license?
$400. $300 biennial renewal fee (12 AAC 02.340(4)) plus $100 delayed-renewal penalty (12 AAC 02.340(13)), once a license has lapsed more than 60 days -- covers the common under-1-year lapse. For a longer lapse (1-3 years), the $300 renewal fee is owed for EACH lapsed biennial period, so the total scales up; a lapse of 5+ years cannot be reinstated at all.
Does a CPA firm need to register separately in Alaska?
Yes -- Alaska has its own firm-level registration or permit requirement, separate from an individual CPA's license renewal. See the full Alaska firm renewal page for the exact cycle and citation.
