Texas CPA CPE Requirements: How Many Hours, By When

How much continuing professional education a Texas CPA actually needs — sourced the same way every fact on this site is: a board page, plus the codified rule itself where we could confirm it against primary law, clearly labelled where we could only confirm it against the board's own page, never a guess.

CPE Hour Requirement
120 hours every 3 years
  • 20-hour minimum in each 1-year period (you can't front-load the whole requirement into a single year).
  • 4 ethics hours, required once every 2 years (counts toward the total above, not an add-on).
Source of record 22 Tex. Admin. Code § 523.112; § 523.130 read the rule →

120 CPE credits per rolling 3-year period tied to the licensee's own birth month (see the CPA-renewal dataset's tx-individual gap record for why the renewal DATE itself is birth-month-personalized and unverified as a fixed date -- the CPE HOUR-COUNT rule itself, unlike the date, is a fixed statewide number, confirmed directly against §523.112). Minimum 20 credits per 1-year period. A board-approved 4-hour, Texas-specific ethics course is required every 2 years (§523.130/.131), counting toward the 120-hour total.
